Description: This concert to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (April 4, 1968) will feature the New England Orchestra, under the direction of Kay George Roberts, conductor. Owen Young, Boston Symphony Orchestra will be the soloist, with J. Keith Motley, Chancellor UMass Boston, as narrator.
On the program are Tunde Jegede's captivating "Lamentation", the rarely performed "Martin" by the famous photographer Gordon Parks, who was also an extraordinary composer and "Akinla" from Fela Sowande's "African Suite". UMass Boston President J.Keith Motley will narrate excerpts from "I have a Dream" to Samuel Barbers' stirring "Adagio for Strings". And for the first time students from the UML String Project will join NEO in a side-by-side performance.
The New England Orchestra (NEO) is Lowell's only professional orchestra with the mission to link cultures through music and to celebrate harmony in diversity. The concert is in conjunction with UML's Peace and Conflict Studies Institute (PACSI) Day Without Violence program. It is free for UMass Lowell students with ID and UMass Lowell String Project students and parents. General admission is $10; $5 for students and seniors.
